About Inmate Classified

Founded in 1996, Inmate Classified is a pioneer of Internet services designed to address prison inmates’ need to reconnect with friends, family, and society at large.

We do not condone crime in any shape or form, but at the same time we do not condone the cruel and unusual punishment of the prisoners, a serious issue deeply rooted in the 8th amendment of the Constitution of the United States. The latest trend that the US supreme court offered to consider is evaluating cruel and unusual punishment based on “evolving standards of decency that mark the progress of a maturing society (Rutherford Institute)“.

In other words nothing is written in stone anymore, and as society evolves the way we perceive “cruel and unusual” also evolves. We welcome policies that promote and facilitate new forms of communication with the incarcerated, applying the same technologies used by the rest of us. If we are to evolve as a society we cannot leave behind millions of our citizens, and pretend they don’t exist.

Inmates posting profiles on Inmate Classified are looking for connections to help them escape the daily grind of prison life. They made mistakes in life that culminated in imprisonment, and although they have family that loves them sometimes that’s not enough. They are looking for new perspectives, confirmation that they are on the right track with their rehabilitation, inspiration, and encouragement.

People like you who respond to these profiles have a huge impact on a prisoner’s life in ways that are not immediately apparent. The simple reaction an inmate has as their name is mentioned at “mail call” when they receive a letter may seem trivial to you, but it is extremely uplifting for them. As much as we like to think about prison as a place for rehabilitation, the reality of prison life paints a different picture. A prisoner can choose a different path as a way forward, with just a little sympathy and encouragement.

Incarcerated people come from all walks of life, with different backgrounds and life experiences. Some of them knew only crime in their youth and got caught in that life moving forward. Some have a good education while others who dropped out of school at an early age try to catch up working towards their GEDs and even college degrees. There are published writes behind bars, poets, artists, activists as well as trade professionals who have jobs in prison helping maintain the facilities.

Prisoners’ contact with family, friends, and the rest of the world is essential to their rehabilitation; eventually the vast majority of them will come home one day. There is no greater gift you can give to a stranger than a few words of encouragement when he needs it most.
